Outdoor concrete made for desert evenings
Covered patios, courtyards, walkways and pool decks take the full force of the Arizona sun. Our outdoor coatings stay color-true, add grip for bare feet and make concrete far easier to keep clean.

Why outdoor concrete needs a different approach
Outdoor concrete in Gold Canyon lives a hard life. Patios and pool decks sit in direct sun for hours, heat up dramatically in summer, and then cool off quickly after sunset. They collect dust from every breeze, stains from planters, barbecue grease and pool chemicals, and water from irrigation and monsoon storms. Bare concrete absorbs all of it, and many builder-grade patios start to look tired within a few years.
The coatings that work well in a garage are not automatically right for outdoors. Standard epoxy yellows in sunlight and becomes slick when wet. Dark colors absorb heat and can become uncomfortable underfoot. That is why we design outdoor systems specifically for the desert, with UV-stable resins, lighter color choices and texture tuned for bare feet.
Outdoor coating systems we install
Flake patio systems
A full-broadcast flake system finished with a UV-stable polyaspartic topcoat and anti-slip aggregate. Flake hides dust and leaves, and light, warm blends complement stucco and desert landscaping.
Solid color and stain-and-seal
For a cleaner, more architectural look, we can apply a pigmented UV-stable coating or a penetrating stain followed by a clear sealer. These options keep the natural texture of the concrete visible.
Pool deck coatings
Around pools, grip and heat matter most. We use textured finishes in light colors and avoid high-gloss surfaces. Where existing deck coatings are cracked or peeling, we remove them before installing a new system.
Clear sealers
For decorative or stamped concrete that is already attractive, a breathable clear sealer protects against stains and UV while keeping the original look.
Managing heat and comfort underfoot
No coating can make concrete cool in July sun, but color and finish make a real difference. Light colors reflect more sunlight and stay noticeably cooler than dark ones. Matte and textured finishes feel less hot and less slippery than glossy surfaces. For areas used with bare feet, such as pool decks and spa surrounds, we recommend light, warm neutrals and a textured topcoat.
Covered patios stay much cooler, so they offer more freedom in color and finish. Many Gold Canyon homeowners carry the same flake blend from the garage out to the covered patio for a consistent look, choosing a lighter version of the blend for the uncovered edges.

Preparing outdoor concrete for coating
Outdoor slabs often have more problems than garage floors. They may have old sealers, paint, efflorescence, rust from patio furniture, cracks from soil movement and low spots where water collects. We start by grinding or shot-blasting to remove contaminants and open the surface, then repair cracks and spalls.
Moisture is important outdoors too. Patios get wet from irrigation, rain and pool splash, and slabs on grade can hold moisture after storms. We test and choose breathable or moisture-tolerant products where needed. Control joints are honored so the coating can move with the slab rather than crack across it.
We also look at drainage. If water ponds against the house or across a walkway, we will point it out and discuss options before coating, since a new finish will not fix a slope problem.
“In Gold Canyon the patio is a second living room for eight months of the year. It deserves a finish that is as comfortable as it is good-looking.”
Curb appeal and HOA considerations
Front entries, courtyards and walkways are visible from the street, and some Gold Canyon communities review exterior changes. We can provide product sheets, color samples and photos for your HOA application. Neutral, natural-looking finishes that complement stone and stucco are usually approved without trouble.
A coated entry walk and front courtyard make a strong first impression, especially when paired with a matching garage floor. For homeowners preparing to sell, refreshing tired outdoor concrete is one of the more noticeable improvements for the money.
Weather and scheduling for outdoor work
Outdoor coatings depend on the weather. In summer we work early in the morning and keep an eye on slab temperatures, since very hot concrete can affect how coatings level and cure. During monsoon season we watch forecasts closely and reschedule if a storm threatens fresh work. Spring and fall offer the easiest conditions and fill up quickly, so it pays to book ahead. Most patios are completed in one to two days, and furniture can usually go back after 24 to 48 hours.
Caring for coated outdoor concrete
Rinse or blow off dust and leaves regularly. Wash with a soft brush, water and a pH-neutral cleaner. Avoid acid-based cleaners and pressure washing at close range. Use pads under heavy planters and lift them occasionally so water does not sit underneath. Keep pool chemical levels balanced to protect both your pool and the deck. With basic care, an outdoor coating will look good for years, and a fresh topcoat can renew it when needed.
Designing for the way Gold Canyon lives outdoors
From October through April, many Gold Canyon households practically live outside. Morning coffee faces the Superstitions, afternoons are spent by the pool and evenings around a fire table watching the cliffs turn gold. We design outdoor floors around those habits. A covered patio with a dining set needs a surface that wipes clean after a meal. A fire table area needs a finish that resists heat marks and ash. A pool deck needs grip and a light color. A shaded courtyard can take a richer color or a decorative stain.
We also think about transitions. Carrying a coordinated finish from the great room through sliding doors to the patio makes small spaces feel larger and ties the home to the view. If you plan to add an outdoor kitchen, pergola or shade sail later, tell us, and we will plan the layout so the coating does not need to be patched when new posts or footings go in.
Patio & Concrete Coatings: your questions
All concrete gets hot in direct sun, but light colors and textured finishes stay cooler and more comfortable. Covered patios offer more color freedom.
We use textured, non-glossy finishes with anti-slip aggregate around pools to provide grip for wet, bare feet.
We remove failing coatings first, repair cracks and then install a new system so it bonds to sound concrete.
Many do for neutral finishes. We can supply samples and product sheets for your application.
Light foot traffic is usually fine the same evening or next day, and furniture can return after 24 to 48 hours.
Yes. Stamped and textured concrete usually gets a breathable clear or tinted sealer that protects the pattern and color, rather than a full flake system that would hide the texture.
Yes. Many homeowners carry the same flake blend from the garage onto the covered patio, often in a slightly lighter mix for the sunny edges, so the home feels consistent from front to back.
If the concrete underneath moves, the coating will follow. We repair existing cracks, respect control joints and use flexible products so minor movement does not show.
